IH 35 from SH45 to Yarrington Road

Alliance completed a traffic operations study for the IH 35 Corridor from SH45 in Austin to Yarrington Road in San Marcos, Texas.  The objectives of this complex study were:

  1. Ensure the adequacy of the design of the freeway main lanes, auxiliary lanes, ramps, ramp location, frontage roads and cross streets constructed within the limits of the project;
  2. Provide a functional design that is sensitive to construction costs;
  3. Optimize the locations of the ramps, express lane access, and HOV and HOT lane access points;
  4. Analyze multiple ramping configurations (Diamond- pattern versus X-pattern) and recommend a preferred alternative; and,
  5. Determine the access impacts of converting the frontage road system from two-way to one-way operation.

For this study, Alliance developed a CORSIM network for the 17-mile segment of IH 35.  The long-range travel demand model was executed incorporating planned developments and roadways, including new bridges and ramp modifications, in the region.  Freeway, auxiliary lanes, and cross-street traffic were incorporated into the CORSIM network to evaluate and prioritize the proposed transportation improvements in the corridor. Upon concurrence with DOT on corridor configuration, Alliance prepared the IAJ for the full corridor ramping, frontage road and cross street access scheme.
