Data Collection

Alliance collects, analyzes, evaluates, and reports transportation related data.  Our in-depth understanding of data applications, gained from being both a user and developer of transportation related data, gives us a unique appreciation for accurate data collection.  We are experienced in all stages of data collection: conceptualization, survey design, implementation/collection, processing, analysis, and reporting.  We have developed technology to support our utilization of the innovative data collection and processing methodologies.  Our methods are field-tested and produce high quality results with more usable data than traditional methods.

Origin-Destination Surveys
Alliance conducts origin-destination surveys that employ both passive and active methodologies to collect the data necessary to support transportation/transit planning, travel demand modeling and engineering efforts.  We conduct intercept interviews to collect private and commercial vehicle travel information.  However, when interruption of the travelling public is a concern, we utilize the latest video detection equipment and software to determine origin-destination information (video license plate capture).  For each method, we have developed custom survey tools and utilize specialized equipment to produce better survey results.

Inventories
Alliance conducts inventory studies for cities and counties across the nation, including collecting roadway, land use and travel time/congestion information.  We collect these inventories via a specialized tool called VideoGPS.  Once captured, roadway or land use information can be reviewed and coded into a roadway network or land use database for further analysis. We developed this specialized tool to review and code land use information at three different levels into parcel level databases.  Travel time/congestion information is especially useful in developing travel demand models, for use in public meetings and in before and after studies.  We have also developed a specialized viewing tool that allows a user to review the captured information while seeing the location on a map.

Traffic Counts
Alliance’s staff is proficient at collecting roadway traffic, turning movement, pedestrian, and bicycle counts.  We collect data for peak and off-peak periods, special events, holidays, and other non-typical conditions.  Depending upon needs and data desired, our specialists collect manual or automatic counts.  For manual counting, we utilize handheld manual counters or tablet computers.  For automatic counts, we collect 24-hour volume, speed, and classification data utilizing mechanical counters and pneumatic tubes.
